Soft-Seated vs Metal-Seated Valves: Which Should You Choose?

26/Sep/Mon 5

Wenzhou Wogao supplies both seat types across gate, globe, check, butterfly and ball valves in cast iron, cast steel and stainless steel.

Soft-seated valves

The sealing surface is an elastomer — typically EPDM, PTFE, NBR or polyurethane.

Pros: excellent sealing, can achieve zero leakage; smooth, low-torque operation.

Limits: temperature is usually capped around 120–150°C; not suited to hard particles or strong solvents that attack the elastomer.

Best for: clean water, HVAC, mild acids/alkalis, potable water (with FBE coating or rubber lining).

Metal-seated valves

The sealing is metal-to-metal, often with an STL (stellite) hard-facing overlay on the seat and disc.

Pros: resists high temperature, high pressure and abrasion; long service in harsh media.

Limits: higher cost; sealing is good but rarely reaches the absolute zero-leakage of a soft seat.

Best for: steam, oil products, slurries and any line with particles or high temperature.
